Alan was promoting his autobiography Not My Father’s Son, a painful, sometimes horrific recounting of his life marred by fatherly psychological and physical abuse. That he was able to heal from this, use the depths of this experience to become a successful actor is testimony to a resolute spirit.
Despite his heavy recollections, Alan was funny, candid and inspiring. Like many others at the end of the evening, I bought Alan’s book and had him sign it to send to a friend in Fife, Scotland. Of course I read the book before sending it off!
During the book signing there wasn’t time for photos of Alan and each person waiting in line. So my pal Joan, (who sells her fabulous treats at the CA&L events), got a shot of me standing in front of the signing table pretending to be his friend. Just at that moment Alan looks up and gives us a wee, bonny smile. Picture perfect!
